I recently wanted to try roasting my own beans on a budget, and those are the ones I made my first experiments with. My initial attempts at roasting them in a pan and with a hot air popcorn popper were not successful they ended up burned, or baked but not roasted ;. But then i discovered a popcorn popper pot with a hand crank agitator - heating the beans on medium on a ceramic range, and agitating the beans at a stiff pace. Every once in a while I'd give them a really fast whirl or reverse direction for a few seconds to pull all of them to the edge of the pot to prevent any stuck ones from burning.

To cool them off, i'd carry the pot out onto the balcony while shaking the pot, and dumping them onto a large cookie sheet. Depending on how many I roast at the same time, I may use a second sheet so they don't get too crowded which would prevent them from cooling properly. This approach consistently produced even results both on a medium roast and a dark roast.

I then store the cooled beans in small batches in Ziploc bags pushing all the air out , let them rest for about hours, and use them up within four days; hand-grinding only as much as i need for a cup, brewing them with water at 80 degrees celsius using an Aero Press. I'm by no means a coffee connoisseur, but even with my initial experiments I could taste delicious flavors and aromas I have never tasted in coffee before.

I made a few batches for friends and colleagues mostly because i was trying a few variations in my roasting technique and couldn't drink as much coffee as i roasted. Eventually i ran out of beans, trying my "old" coffee again that i really liked prior. However, something changed: my palate. Roasting my own beans and preparing coffee as fresh as i could, i now don't want to go back. And while i will certainly try other beans as well, I am really happy with how these worked for my first home-roasting experiments.

For now, I'll keep re-ordering these.. I have tried many beans from many lands and this is clearly outstanding in my humble opinion. The crema profile is deep and rich and the cupping notes are off the profile scale. I would like to buy this in 5 bags or larger. I sent that request to Primos Coffee today and will report back with their response. Let me preface this review by acknowledging that like their eggs, everyone has their own special way they like their coffee. Here on the Oregon Coast, we tend the lean to the darker side of this magical bean. That being said, it took me a bit of time experimenting with this bean to find that oily dark roast I love.

But find it I did. This bean takes a medium roast very well, if you're into that sort of thing, and seems to need a little something extra to get to that "sizzling bacon" second crack that releases the oils. I found success by slightly overloading my little coffee roaster with these beans and stretching the roast time beyond it's normal range.

The resulting coffee is amazing, truly delicious. I just ordered my second bag. These have been the most consistent, easy to roast beans I have ever used. The taste is good across all roast times and each batch comes out great. I use a Presto hot air popcorn popper and roast these outside until I hear the second crack. I can easily hear when they are done from inside the house. The beans all seem to crack at the same time. I plan on giving some fresh roasted coffee as a gift and I have been struggling to find just the right bean.

I feel that these would be an excellent choice.

How to BUY Green Coffee Beans for Home Roasting

Everything from the consistency of the roasted bean to the aroma of the grind and the taste make this five star for me. It is definitely coffee you want to fully roast, as it made a better full bold roast than when I did a medium 'lighter' roast. Its bold dark roast did not taste at all bitter, but very smooth, richer, kinda fruity, with cocoa and caramel notes. I found this coffee to not be very acidic which is how I like it. The description and reviews made it sound like really good coffee, but I could never get a decent tasting roast out of it. It had a funky-sour smell just out of the bag, and most batches produced a roast with a sour note to the beans.

I tried roasting very dark, but got over-roasted coffee before I got something without the funk. I tried a lighter roast, but just never got something that didn't give everyone who smelled it an "Ewww" reaction. The taste in the cup wasn't much better.

After going through the first two pounds, the nasty smell of the green beans was getting worse, and I chucked the rest into the trash. Maybe it was a bad batch, maybe not dried enough to keep, but not worth re-ordering. I'll just stick with my old source for a little higher cost per pound and reliably good beans. The bag was nice looking, and the beans looked ok, but life is too short for icky coffee.

Far, far less cost than a pound of ground arabica coffee with the freshest taste one could imagine I promised the vendor I would critique his coffee after I had my first chance to roast, burr grind his beans and let my French Press coffee maker do its thing. I have had my Breville burr grinder for about ten years but bought already roasted beans.

Never again will I pick up a package of roasted beans not knowing how long they have sat on the shelf. I found the process very easy as illustrated by a number of YouTube videos. Yes, you can spend a lot of money on roasters, but this is a simple easy method for home use.

I no longer have to pour a 16oz cup to feel it. I can pour a 10oz and be wired up for a good while. I also enjoy the chocolaty notes in this coffee.

I'd purchase this again. I think this is one of the best products available on amazon. I am usually disappointed with any product on this site- but these green coffee beans gave me hope! I am starting a micro-roastery and this was my first bag of beans to practice on- just about to buy my second bag One person found this helpful.
