Both groups ate the same number of calories and macronutrients and lost weight after 12 weeks, but the two-a-dayers experienced a greater decrease in body mass index. Interesting, but this study was rather small and has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal. The length of the study was also too short to tell if this weight loss would last in the long haul. Plus I don't think eating two meals a day is at all reasonable for the majority of Americans.

Everyone has different sleep habits and work routines, and for some, that could mean not eating for at least eight hours or maybe more. I don't know about you, but I would be starved and probably rather cranky. Furthermore we are a society that spends a lot of time around a dinner table either in our homes, restaurants, or parties, and forgoing being social and connecting with others is not what I would recommend in order to lose weight.

The big experiment: could I lose fat just by changing my meal times?

That said, this study does reinforce two important things: 1 Breakfast should not be skipped, especially if weight loss is a goal. There is a difference between grazing and planned snacks, and the latter is what I teach my patients. If they were to have a huge gap between their meals, then a mini meal such as low-fat Greek yogurt and berries would be ideal. The emphasis, though, needs to be on the "mini" and not for them to treat their snack as another complete meal.

I think that is where some people go astray and are not successful with losing weight. Grazing can be synonymous with mindless eating and can definitely be a deterrent for slimming down. But if I have a small breakfast like one bowl of oatmeal and a small snack throughout the day like a piece of fruit or a high protein cereal bar and then I have a big dinner around 5 or 6pm, it works well for me, and I don't feel hungry until about 5 or 6 when I eat my big dinner and then I'm full until when I go to bed. It's sort of a trade off. You can eat 6 small meals and be hungry all day because your metabolism is on overdrive, or you can eat 2 big meals a day and not be hungry but your metabolism won't be working to it's full potential but it won't matter as much since you'll probably be eating less I don't think I could only eat two meals if I tried.

I swear I'm hungry practically all day so small meals throughout is the only way I'll get through. Break those meals up!

Lose weight

I eat like six times a day, at least small snacks. What is happening is your sugar levels are going up and down. By the time you get to a meal your body is starved for fuel so it is much easier to overeat at that point. Try eating a bigger meal in the morning that is filled with protein and complex carbs. Egg whites with veggies is awesome and healthy. It really helps if you plan out when and what you are going to eat for at least a few weeks til you get used to eating more often.

For now try doing four small meals of maybe calories each. Put it all in your tracker the night before and see how it works out. Implement more low cal veggies in your day too if you feel like you need to bulk up your mini meals.

  8. Eating such big meals is taxing on your digestive system as well. Try spreading it out for a few days and see how good it is for your energy levels when you keep your blood sugar level more constant. I eat two meals a day; it is very rarely that I eat three meals a day.

    The meal I normally miss is breakfast and I know that is not good. I'm trying to get in the roll of eating breakfast.

    I guess I'm just confused as to if you really do need to eat 4 small meals and not before bed time or if those are just myths. ONLY 1 4 me. I have a similar problem.. I am having a really hard time eating 5 or 6 times a day. I rarely even get hungry before 5pm..

    Maybe you could split your meals in half and still be in your calorie range It's hard adapting to big changes, i'm going through the same thing.. I heard that you lose weight in your sleep and the peak times for this was around 10pm I usually stay awake until am also.. But I'm certain it's worth it in the long run.

When I wake up later like you I usually eat on a pretty similar schedule only I end up eating again closer to 10 or Eating later doesnt bother me, but if its a problem for you then maybe you could try eating something smaller as soon as you get up or shortly after and then just a slightly lighter lunch a little bit later than
