Alaska Nasturtium

The Nasturtium Alaska, 'Tropaeolum minus', has beautiful flowers in shades of yellow, orange, mahogany, and cream with light green, marbled foliage. Every salad should have edible Nasturtium and Viola flowers in it! Nasturtium leaves are edible. Nasturtiums perform well in bad soil, but are comfortable in average garden soil that is not overly fertile. Nasturtiums are used for edging and borders and can be grown inside. These plants will also deter whiteflies, squash bug, and rabbits.

The Daisy Shasta Alaska, 'Chrysanthemum maximum', is an easy to grow, long blooming, very hardy perennial. The large, single, 3 to 5 inch bright white flowers make for a beautiful addition to any perennial garden.The flowers have a distinct yellow center. The Shasta Alaska has a very long blooming period of 90 to 120 days, early summer to fall. Plant in early spring, 2 to 3 weeks before the average last frost date, or as late as 2 months before the first fall frost. The Alaska Shasta makes excellent cut flowers.

The Daisy White Buttons, 'Chrysanthemum paludosum', has masses of small 1/2 to 1 inch white flowers with yellow centers that bloom for months and months. The bright white flowers look radiant in the light of a full moon. There are so many flowers, it is hard to see the foliage. They bloom continually from spring until fall. Shear the White Buttons Daisy back in mid summer to encourage better fall bloom. The White Buttons Daisy makes excellent cut flowers and is used in window boxes, pots, rock gardens and as an edging plant.

The Cleome Violet Queen, 'Cleome spinosa', is a knockout! It is easy to grow and lends authority to any garden with the wonderful late summer color. The fluffy flower clusters are 3 to 6 inches across, and are a deep violet color. The Violet Queen is a wonderful flower to attract butterflies. The flowers and dry seed capsules are wonderful in arrangements. They can be mass planted in island beds, instead of trees or shrubs, where a strong vertical impact is needed. Plant in full sun for best results.

The Coleus Rainbow Blend, 'Coleus hybridus', is one of the best plants for adding masses of colorful foliage to shady areas. Great in north facing flower beds and around shade trees. It is also an excellent houseplant that will add color on those dreary winter days. The foliage colors are white, bronze, gold, copper, yellow, pink, red, and purple. Insignificant flower spikes appear in late summer. Rainbow Blends are great for pots and planters.

The Larkspur Sublime Bicolor, 'Consolida ambigua', has tall spires of double, dark blue and white flowers. This is the first ever bicolored Larkspur. It is considered one of the best for cut and dried flower arrangements. The 1/4 to 1/2 inch double dark blue and white flowers are densely packed on tall stems. Plant in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. Larkspur are excellent for cut or dried flowers and as backdrop plant in front of a fence or wall.

The Coreopsis Plains Dwarf Bicolor, 'Coreopsis tinctoria (Calliopsis)', is a cheerful member of the Sunflower family and will delight gardeners with its vivid yellow and maroon flowers and feathery green foliage. The Coreopsis Dwarf Bicolor is very easy to grow and displays brilliant, easy color with continuous blooms. The flowers are 1 to 2 inches across and have a deep burgundy center. The foliage is dill scented. They are often used for cut flowers. Remove old flowers (deadhead) to encourage additional blooms.

The Cosmos Albatross, 'Cosmos bipinnatus', is a pure white selection of the 'Early Sensation' series. Lovers of white flowers must try this Cosmos. The masses of pure white flowers are very early on this tall Cosmos variety, and the flowers are 3 to 5 inches in size. Cosmos begin blooming 10 weeks after seeding and bloom from summer to first fall frost. They are excellent colorful bedding plants for low maintenance, dry areas and are great for cut flowers. They attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
